Q. What is the outcome? By the end of the 2006-07 school year, more than 93,000 school children had been signed up for an arts fieldtrip since October 2002 ? half of them within the past year alone. The results are making a difference for entire generations of youngsters: captivating developing young minds with a first-hand experience of the arts, opening new avenues to literacy and knowledge, and creating the possibility for today?s citizens-in-the-making to become tomorrow?s artists, audiences, and arts patrons. For some children, school fieldtrips offer the only opportunity they will ever have to visit an art gallery or museum, hear an opera or classical concert, see a play on stage or attend a dance performance.

Q. How is it organized? ArtsBusXpress began in 2002 as an unprecedented partnership uniting education, civic, arts and government entities. Since July 2005 ArtsBusXpress has operated as an independent non-profit organization with a board of directors and an executive director that engage the community on behalf of arts fieldtrips for school children. Contributions are sought from arts organizations, businesses and corporations, community organizations, grants and foundations, and individuals. Special arts events and fundraisers enable the general public to ?get on board? and act on their concerns about arts education, too. Bus grants enable their teachers to integrate arts content into the curriculum by selecting activities and events at more than 168 regional venues.

Q. How much does it cost to send a classroom on an arts fieldtrip? Many presenters offer schools free or discounted tickets for students, but without bus money teachers can?t take accept them. The cost for student transportation varies widely across the County of San Diego ? an area the size of Connecticut! Each of the 42 school districts has it own transportation options and policies: some have school buses, some share; some use private carriers; some use public transportation; some use parent carpools (but liability can be an important issue.) All have been impacted by rising gas prices. The number of students that fit on a bus varies according to age and the number of chaperones required. Rates also vary according to the time of the day and the distance. In FY '07 ArtsBusXpress awarded bus grants at actual cost up to a maximum of $150 for City Schools and $350 for County Schools per bus.
