Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is ArtsBusXpress?
ArtsBusXpress is a unique local initiative designed to expand the role of the arts in educating San Diego school children. Lack of fieldtrip transportation often prevents access to arts-rich learning at music, theatre, dance, art and museum venues in the greater community. ArtsBusXpress enables teachers to apply on line for bus grants to give their students a life-changing introduction to authentic arts and culture: A Ride to the Arts!
Q. Who are the partners?
ArtsBusXpress partners with the Visual and Performing Arts departments of the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego Unified School district. ArtsBusXpress also collaborates with cultural organizations throughout the region, such as the San Diego History Center Museum, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Advocates for Classical Music, and the San Diego Symphony, in expanding arts education opportunities for San Diego children.
Q. What is the mission and goal of ArtsBusXpress?
ArtsBusXpress is dedicated to transforming the education of every San Diego child with the arts. To this end ArtsBusXpress underwrites fieldtrip transportation, the missing link in a two-way street that connects school children with the experience of arts and culture in the community.
Q. What is the outcome?
More than 185,000 school children have experienced arts and science fieldtrips since October 2002. The results are making a difference for our children, our future innovators. The field trips inspire children with a first-hand experience of the arts and sciences, opening new avenues to literacy and knowledge, problem solving and creativity. For some children, school fieldtrips offer the only opportunity they will ever have to visit a gallery or museum, hear an opera or concert, see a play on stage or attend a dance performance.
Q. How is it organized?
ArtsBusXpress began in 2002 as an unprecedented partnership uniting education, civic, arts and government entities. Since July 2005 ArtsBusXpress has operated as an independent non-profit organization with a board of directors and an executive director that engage the community on behalf of arts fieldtrips for school children. Contributions are sought from arts organizations, businesses and corporations, community organizations, grants and foundations, and individuals. Special arts events and fundraisers enable the general public to "get on board" and raise awareness about arts education, too. To join the mailing list, contact: firstname.lastname@example.org or call (858) 273-3500.
Q. What schools benefit from ArtsBusXpress?
ArtsBusXpress grants serve the 498,000 children who live in San Diego County and attend more than 640 public and private schools. Bus grants enable their teachers to integrate arts content into the curriculum by selecting activities and events at more than 168 regional venues.
Q. How much does it cost to send a classroom on an arts field-trip?
Many presenters offer schools discounted tickets. The cost for student transportation varies across the County of San Diego. Each of the 42 school districts has it own transportation options and policies: some have school buses, some share; some use private carriers; some use public transportation; some use parent carpools (but liability can be an important issue.) All have been impacted by rising gas prices. The number of students that fit on a bus varies according to age and the number of chaperones required. Rates also vary according to the time of the day and the distance. ArtsBusXpress awards bus grants ranging from $200 for City Schools and $300 for County Schools per bus.
