The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation’s Academy for Environmental Stewardship goes virtual offering online real-time programming via Zoom, Google Classroom, or other digital platforms. Discover nature all around you with one of our stewardship teachers as they bring the fun, engagement, and hands-on approach to learning via your in-classroom monitor. Grade-specific lessons are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core State Standards, and STEAM Concepts, all designed for grades K-3.

Using our Discovery Center reptiles, amphibians, and touch-tank inhabitants, students learn about their evolutionary history, life cycles, inheritance and variation of traits, and adaptations. Viewing animals up close, students gain an understanding about environmental forces that cause some animals to change over time, survive well, less well, or not at all. Let our animal experts guide you on a virtual encounter that will be sure to leave everyone smiling and inspired.

This segment gives students the opportunity to “experience today” by guiding them through the flora and fauna that inhabit the Agua Hedionda Lagoon and beyond. Students learn about adaptations, heredity, evolution and diversity, and gain knowledge of the habitat and experience the ecosystem firsthand. Live local raptor presentation available upon request.

Live the Past

Students “live the past” as they learn about the people that inhabited the Agua Hedionda Lagoon and surrounding area throughout history. Three 30-minute rotations include an “infused language lesson” of common words used in the Luiseno language, traditional weaving to show students the many useful items Luiseno women made with basket weaving techniques, and the medicinal purpose of native plants as students become medicine men and women to heal common ailments. Local Native American storyteller also available upon request.
