New Village Arts produces full seasons of mainstage productions and has done so for the past 18 years in the City of Carlsbad with award-winning actors, designers, and directors. To date, New Village has received over 30 Critics Circle Awards honoring the work done on NVA’s mainstage and regularly receives “Critic’s Choice” designations from leading reviewers. Surrounding these productions, NVA hosts talkback discussions and other supplementary events designed to create conversation and cultivate community.

When we think of ‘clowns’, we think of makeup, red noses and silliness – which is true! But there’s so much more! Students will learn a brief history of the Clown as well as exploring what goes into clown training! Students will put on their own red nose and meet their own inner clown!

Playwriting

Have you ever wondered how a play goes from the playwright’s mind to the page? In this workshop, students will work with a playwright to discuss the process of creating a new script. Students will work on creating an original a short scene or monologue!

Shakespeare

Shakespeare is one of the most recognizable names in Classical Western Theater but his words are some of the most confusing! In this workshop, students will take a deep dive into the words of Shakespeare and find the rhythm, passion, and drama in those sometimes confusing sentences. Students will work with any Shakespearean texts being used in class or with sonnets!

Spoken Word Poetry

Historically the Spoken Word has been used as a tool to raise awareness using the voice and oral poetry as an instrument of resistance. The effectiveness of the style marked by rhyme, cunning and creative ability. More well known as the FLOW! In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to write poetry and practice performative techniques in a collaborative and community space.

Stage Makeup

How do we use makeup to create characters? What are the important things to keep in mind? Where do you start? In this workshop, students will discuss the fundamentals of Stage Makeup! Students will work with a professional artist to design their own look!

Since the dawn of man, we have been telling stories; to pass down history, to pass knowledge, to keep each other safe and entertained. It is our oldest art form. During this workshop, students will explore the fundamentals of an engaging, effective story. Students will end this workshop with their own, well-crafted personal story.
