San Diego Zoo

Home to over 3,700 endangered animal species from a myriad of international habitats, the world-famous San Diego Zoo is a site of education, conservation, and awareness. Students will see acclaimed botanical displays housing over 700,000 plants, along with almost 660 species and subspecies from a variety of countries. Through aviaries, bioclimatic zones, and scenic pathways, the San Diego Zoo showcases rare and unique animal and plant communities in naturalistic environments and close-up encounters. The Zoo is not currently admitting non-householded groups, however in non-COVID times admission to the Zoo is free for San Diego County students on most days throughout the traditional school year.

All San Diego Zoo Education programs are conducted virtually. We can send teachers a link for a Zoom meeting which they can share with their students OR teachers can send us a link to join them and their students on their preferred platform. Teachers will be able to specify their preference when they sign up for their program.

Explore the components of a watershed and learn how your 4th grade students can become Watershed Heroes!  This program begins with a pre-recorded adventure through a local San Diego watershed with a San Diego Zoo educator and Dr. Zoolittle.  Along the way, students will learn the components of a watershed, meet local species that depend on a healthy watershed, and learn how they can protect wildlife and habitats through specific conservation action steps.

After students have completed the asynchronous introduction, they will be ready to join our zoo educators for a virtual tour of global watersheds at the San Diego Zoo! This live, interactive program utilizes behind the scenes presentations and live webcams to explore watersheds and wildlife from around the world. Students will also be empowered to follow their curiosity and research independently through explicit instruction on accessing and navigating San Diego Zoo Kids online resources. This engaging, interactive program culminates by challenging students to become Watershed Heroes by committing to at least one conservation action step. Teachers may choose to supplement and extend the learning with our online curriculum

This program is open to San Diego County Title 1 fourth (4th) grade classes.  It is funded by the Price Philanthropies.  Other non-Title 1 schools may apply but subject to availability.
